Structural techniques are used to obtain a differential diagnosis of functional and structural disorders of the musculoskeletal system (e.g. restricted movement of the joints and spine, tension and shortening of the muscles, swelling of the connective tissue, strength of the ligamentous structures) and their effects on the rest of the body (organs, other joints ...). Structural osteopathic techniques are used to release joint blockages. The therapist releases the blockage with quick, short movements. This sends corrective nerve impulses through the body. This therapy is often accompanied by a click during the correction, but the treatment is always painless. Gentle but very precise manual techniques such as manipulations ("straightening" blocked spinal segments) or soft tissue techniques are used to set in motion the body's own regulatory mechanisms to stimulate (restore) the body's self-healing. The respiratory activity of the diaphragm leads to a constant movement of the organs. Inflammation or surgery can lead to scarring and reduced mobility, which can also affect the function of individual organs, according to osteopathy. Direct but gentle techniques seek to restore mobility and interplay between individual organs. In visceral work, the embryonic development of the organs is of great importance because the "embryonic developmental movement" that each organ performs creates a tactile movement that the organ has as an expression of its vitality.
