Like other osteopathic trends, functional osteopathy is based on the concept of self-healing. The body "knows" how to reduce existing tensions. If your stomach hurts, you unconsciously lean forward to relax your abdomen. This is what we call an analgesic position, and it's the optimal way to deal with painful tension. In this way, the osteopath will bring together the body segments in excess tension. Once the tension has been reduced by this act, the body will automatically return to this non-tensioned position to regain its balance. The osteopath can then withdraw from the area, which will then be free. This osteopathy is functional, as opposed to structural, and uses the functions still present to restore balance and health.
