As a form of treatment, philosophy and science, osteopathy was discovered and developed by the American physician Andrew Taiylor Still (1828-1917) as a holistic concept.

He noticed that even the smallest loss of elasticity or misalignment in joints can lead to irritation of the neighboring nerves and vessels. Thereby, the free flow of arterial and venous blood, as well as lymph, can be impaired, and the quality of neural transmission of stimuli can be disturbed. This leads to a weakening of the self-healing powers, and may result in disease of the affected areas.

Still developed manual techniques to detect and treat these losses of elasticity in the tissues, so that the fluctuation of fluids in the body is unhindered again, and the self-healing forces become effective once more.

Osteopaths thus do not primarily address the patient's symptoms, but seek first to understand the causes or causal links of the complaints, and to seek the patient's current health potential.

For this purpose, the patient is examined in detail, and the osteopath is instructed to perceive his counterpart as a human being with body mind and soul.
