What is osteopathy? Osteopathy is a primary care medical profession, which means that the osteopath has the necessary knowledge to treat any patient in the first consultation. He or she will make an osteopathic diagnosis, or refer the patient to the appropriate medical specialist if further tests are required to establish a definitive medical diagnosis. His treatment focuses on the biomechanics (body mechanics in the broadest sense) of the human being, viewing it as a system in equilibrium. This means that the origin of a symptom may be located in a different place from its expression. The osteopath considers the individual as a whole and in context, taking into account his or her entire history. In Switzerland, a 7-year full-time training program (5 years of theoretical and practical training, followed by 2 years of assistant training) has been in place since 1991.

How a consultation works A standard consultation lasts 45 minutes. It begins with a detailed history of the reason for consultation and the patient's general state of health and history. This is followed by an osteopathic examination, including observation, clinical tests and palpation of the various anatomical structures. With this information, the osteopath synthesizes, makes an osteopathic diagnosis and develops a treatment plan. The osteopath uses manual techniques to restore correct movement and function to dysfunctional structures. He chooses and adapts the appropriate techniques for each individual.
